Nanoparticulate zinc oxide surface-modified with a carboxylic acid (I), is new. Nanoparticulate zinc oxide surface-modified with a carboxylic acid of formula (I) are new: HOOC-R1-(CH2)n-R2-CH3 (I) R1 = CH2(OCH2CH2)m; m = 0-11; n = 0-30; R2 = CH2, CHMe, CMe2, phenylene, O or S; provided that n is greater than 11 when m = 0. Independent claims are also included for: (1) production of surface-modified nanoparticulate zinc oxide by suspending zinc oxide in a nonpolar or low-polarity solvent, adding (I), heating the mixture and removing the solvent; (2) production of zinc oxide dispersions by dispersing the surface-modified zinc oxide in an organic solvent; (3) dispersion with a zinc oxide content of 0.001-50 wt.% produced as above; (4) coating method comprising applying a zinc oxide dispersion produced as above to a surface and removing the solvent; (5) cosmetic product comprising a surface-modified zinc oxide or zinc oxide dispersion as above; (6) pharmaceutical composition a surface-modified zinc oxide or zinc oxide dispersion as above.
