The present invention relates to a method for positioning a measuring device, which emits optical radiation, and receives, for measuring wear of the lining of a container, wherein the method the fixing of coordinate systems for the measuring device and the container in this coordinate systems are combined and the positions of a plurality of specific fixing markings in the coordinate system of the measuring device are determined individually, wherein each of the fixing markings, a substantially regular shape, whereby the position of the fixation marks is determined by: (a) deflection of an optical radiation beam via a first fixing marking into first and second intersecting directions and determining the position of the center and at least two linear edges of the same and generating a first temporary co-ordinate system on the basis of the position of the centers and the directions of the at least two edges, (b) searching of at least two further fixing markings and determining the position of their centers on the basis of the first temporary co-ordinate system, (c) defining the coordinate system of the container on the basis of the centers of positions of the fixing markings.
