Arrangement (20) for protection of an electrical voltage supply system (10) and or a load (16) connected to it against overloading. The arrangement has means for computer based monitoring of the state of at least an electrical cable (14) of the supply system using a thermodynamic model of the cable. The model is used to predict a cable temperature, which is then compared with a stored threshold value. If the threshold value is exceeded, a corresponding protection function is triggered. An Independent claim is made for a method for protection of an electrical voltage supply system and or a load connected to it against overloading.
