A hydrophilic polyolefin material (especially fibers, filaments or non-wovens) is made from a mixture of a polyolefin and a melt additive containing a fatty acid ester, the fatty acid ester being post-activated on the polyolefin surface by application of a surfactant containing a silicone compound and a quaternary ammonium compound. A hydrophilic polyolefin material (especially fibers, filaments or non-wovens) is made from a mixture of a polyolefin and a melt additive containing a fatty acid ester of formula (I), the fatty acid ester being post- activated on the polyolefin surface by application of a surfactant containing a silicone compound and a quaternary ammonium compound. R-CO-O-CH2-CH2-O-R' (I) R = 23-35C alkyl; and R' = H or 1-4C alkyl.
