The surgical needle is polished mechanically to give a surface (8) with projections (6) and recesses (7), with a roughness depth of 0.2-7.5 mum. The needle is of cold drawn spring steel, with a tensile strength of 2000-3000 N/mm2, with a low-contrast and non-glossy surface through a dark gilding.. The polishing action uses a powder together with ethanol, isopropanol or water and their mixtures.
