The device has a first Stirling engine (12) working as an engine, an electrical machine (16) driven in generator mode by the Stirling engine and generating electrical energy and a second Stirling engine (14) working as a heat pump and driven by the first Stirling engine and/or by the electrical machine working in motor mode. The Stirling engines are free piston Stirling engines. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a method of generating electrical energy and/or regenerative use of thermal energy.
