Security system and monitoring method for detecting and locating of valuable items of motor vehicle equipment, whereby an item serial number is transmitted over a communications network so that a stolen item can be quickly located

Motor vehicle security system in which motor vehicles are equipped with both mobile phone and short range, e.g. hands-free locking, communication systems. Valuable items within a vehicle have an identity code that is stored in a database. If an item is stolen the identity code can be circulated to other vehicles via the mobile phone network, while the short range communication system can be used to interrogate other vehicles in the immediate vicinity to see if they carry an item with an identification code matching that of the stolen item. An independent claim is made for a method for monitoring for and locating items stolen from a motor vehicle.
