Foam molding process for incorporation of a vehicle airbag module in an internal panel involves pressurization of the airbag interior to counteract external foam pressure during molding
A hollow insert(8) to be contained inside outer foam body is positioned in foaming cavity(4) of molding tool(2,3). When correctly located, part(9) of outer periphery extends into cavity. Foam(12) is introduced into cavity and its pressure measured. The hollow insert is internally pressurized and latter pressure adjusted in accordance with measured foam pressure to prevent deformation of insert. Internal pressure in the insert(8), typically an air bag module, is set at a level equal to the pressure exerted by the foam(12) on the outside of the module. Foam pressure is measured by a sensor(11) on the tool close to the airbag module. Foam is introduced between an external skin(5) and a carrier layer(6) positioned in the tool cavity(4). The module is located on the inner side of the carrier layer and protrudes into the foaming cavity.
