The system enables a position to be determined relative to a reference point. Coordinates of the reference point are stored when a trigger pulse (16) occurs. A computing unit (14) determines an instantaneous position. A direction detector (13), e.g. using Loran-C, may also be provided, as well as a gyro compass, crossed receiving antennas, a global positioning system (GPS), and an indicator (15) with LEDs.
