The vehicle occupant classification method involves detecting the mass on a vehicle seat from the pressure (P) on the seat and evaluating the variation of the pressure with time (t). The mass is classified using the gradient of the pressure and distinguishing between a continuous and discontinuous pressure profile. The pressure is measured from the time (t1) of first contact of the mass with the seat.
