The speed changer has adjusters (12) that move along a hollow shaft (11) in axial direction. The axial movement of the adjusters moves the piston rod (14) in a pneumatic cylinder (13) which, in turn, moves a couple fitting (21). The movement of the couple fitting actuates pilot valves (28,29) to shift the gears included in a manual vehicle gearbox. The couple fitting is arranged below and joined to the piston rod in the pneumatic cylinder. The piston rod moves within the pneumatic cylinder in axial direction. An independent claim is included for the gear switching process using the mechanical-pneumatic switch unit.
