X-ray detector has a multiplicity of pixels, whereby each pixel is comprised of one or more sub-pixels (9), whereby each sub-pixel has detector material for direct conversion of the incident radiation into an electrical signal. Each of the sub-pixels has a unit for conversion of the electrical signal into a corresponding digital signal. A unit for processing the digital signals generates a signal that is representative of the whole X-ray quanta energy and or number incident on a pixel.
