The iron has a heating source, preferably in the form of a halogen lamp (10). The thermal radiation from the halogen lamp is used to heat the iron material via mirrors (11) and hence the heating and cooling times can be kept very short. The halogen lamp can be used to heat the water in a steam iron. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a halogen lamp heating arrangement for an iron (b) and an arrangement for heating a body.
