Electronic control system is based on a number of communicating layers (HWE, DE, ASW), whereby one of the module layers (DE) is configured as a configuration specific encapsulation module for coupling a selected sensor-actuator configuration (200) to the upper layer module (ASW) of the control system. The encapsulation layer has at least a unit driver module (DD) for conversion of a sensor (Si) electric signal into a physical signal for the selected configuration and a virtual unit layer with at least a virtual sensor module (VD) for processing of signals from one or more unit drivers to provide an output signal to the upper layer. An independent claim is made for an overall electronic system with a number of electronic systems for controlling a combustion engine.
