A device (13) compresses and organizes images, and stores them in packets with given parameters, allowing access to the individual packets. A device (14,19) decompresses the packet image data in a packet-wise manner based on a request form a user work station (11a,11b,11c), so that multicomponent images with progressive parameters are generated. An independent claim is included for a method of operating a medical system architecture.
