Antimicrobial surface-modified bandages for wound treatment, e.g. of burns, have a healing and a cell growth stimulating effect and have a chemical element integrated in the surface and molecularly bonded
A surface-modified bandage material or the like (especially an antimicrobial material with healing and a cell growth stimulating effect) comprises a substrate with a selectively modified surface layer with a fixed amount of an active chemical element at least partly integrated close to the surface layer and bonded to the molecular structure of the bandage material. Independent claims are also included for surface modification of the bandage material by implantation of silver, gold, platinum, palladium, zinc, tin, copper, antimony or iodine involving either: (1) placing the substrate in a vacuum chamber and evacuating the chamber and then applying a beam of the required mass-selected, accelerated and positively charged ions to the substrate with scanning of the beam such that ions are incorporated near to the surface of the substrate and the element is bonded to the polymer chain of the substrate; or (2) a filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) process comprising treatment of substrate in an evacuated chamber with a plasma of high- energy positively charged ions of the required element accelerated by a bias voltage.
