To feed sliver automatically into a spinner from a can, the end of the sliver is held by two grip units, and the sliver is cut between them to form a defined sliver start end. The sliver is transferred to a third grip unit, to be carried towards the spinner feed. The free end of the sliver (12) hangs over the edge (8) of the sliver can (11), for the mechanism (10) to grasp it by two grip units (1,2) which have movements in relation to each other. The first grip (1) swings on a horizontal axis (15) over the can, with a suction sliver grip (17) to hold the sliver at different levels, to work with a clamp at its shearing edge.
