Apparatus for determining the chromatic dispersion of an optical system for use in broad band telecommunication networks based on the phase differential between the phase with single side band modulation

The apparatus for determining the chromatic dispersion of the optical system includes a transmitter for generating an output signal with a given carrier frequency. A modulator (10, 12, 16) is provided for single side band modulation of the output signal at a modulation frequency with, selectively, the upper side band or the lower side band. A phase sensitive detector (18, 14) detects the phase of a signal component, modulated at the modulation frequency, of the single side band modulated output signal after its transmission through the optical system. An analysis unit calculates the chromatic dispersion of the optical system from the ratio of the phase differential between the phase with upper side band modulation and the phase with lower side band modulation and the square of the modulation frequency. Independent claims also cover a method for determining chromatic dispersion.
