A device for extinguishing a fire comprises a treatment stage for exhaust gases, a quenching/washing stage for exhaust gases, transporting devices and pipelines for forming a gas circulation. The exhaust gases are enriched with water vapor in the quenching/scrubbing stage. The formation of an oxygen-deficient atmosphere is intensified around the fire by mixing the exhaust gases and water vapor. An independent claim is also included for a fire extinguishing method using the above device.
