Ultrasonic method for authentication and identification of fingerprints in which the fingerprint is sampled using an ultrasound impulse to create a quantity of pattern arrays with each array containing a pattern function. The resultant arrays are compared with stored arrays to create auto- and cross correlation functions. The correlations are processed to create fingerprint models which are compared in order to find a correct fingerprint.
