Process for determining the volume/mass flow of a melt in a tapping spout (2) of a metallurgical vessel, especially a blast furnace, comprises measuring the distances of the base (7a) of the empty spout (7) and the melt meniscus (8) from a reference point using a measuring unit (4) arranged above the spout and feeding to an analysis unit. The analysis unit calculates the flow cross-section of the melt from the measured distances and by taking into account the cross-sectional geometry of the spout. The analysis unit also calculates the volume stream of the melt from the average flow speed determined by the cross-section and the periphery of the melt stream and the inclination angle of the spout and the flow cross-section of the melt stream. An independent claim is also included for a process for operating a blast furnace for treating a melt.
