The battery charging device has the connection of an external charging device (8) or an external starting aid (9) detected for activating the DC/DC converter between the lower voltage circuit and the higher voltage circuit of the onboard electrical network (1), to allow charging of first the higher voltage battery (5) required for starting and then the lower voltage battery (4). An independent claim for a battery charging method for batteries within a dual-voltage onboard electrical network in an automobile is also included.
