A current-space vector is supplied to the synchronous machine (6) to excite the rotor into harmonic oscillation. The stator currents or desired stator currents are detected, or estimated. Characteristics are extracted from the detected signals, and from a non-absolute rotor position determined by an incremental sensor (7). The characteristics allow estimation of the absolute rotor position with respect to the pole pitch. An independent claim is included for a drive system.
