Head mounted display (HMD) device has an image generating unit (1) that is controlled by a control unit to output a polychromatic image. A data unit provides image data to the control unit for output of the image. Imaging optics (2) placed downstream of the image generating unit comprise a wavelength-dependent diffractive element that images the image so that it can be perceived by the user. The data unit pre-scales the image data to provide wavelength dependent compensation of the imaging scale. An independent claim is made for a method of image presentation for an HMD device.
