The detector has a distance measuring device (1) and a warning signal generator (8). The distance is measured using a sonar, radar, IR or laser and warning is given either by illumination of rear, brake or indicator lights or by acoustically by a horn. The warning generator (8) can be controlled (2) so that its signal varies depending on the measured distance to the front or rear of the vehicle or other object or pedestrian. An independent claim is also included for a detection method.
