The carrier device for the steering shaft (2) has an upper bearing (3) which is fitted in a first carrier (6). The first carrier is connected to a second carrier (5) by a variable connection for selecting a service state by fixing the two carriers relative to each other, and also a setting state for subsequent transition to the service state. The second carrier is fixed to a bearing member of the vehicle. A lower bearing (4) permits the steering shaft to turn round an axis through it.
