Method for generating an application program with a sequence of commands for a programmable logic controller which receives input signals, executes commands and generates output signals. The commands comprise function code and associated input references that refer to memory cells, actual values or parameter values. A user interface is provided to enable precise processing of a command. An independent claim is made for a programmer unit with a user interface for generating an application program for a programmable logic unit.
