Gas generator for a vehicle occupant-protection system comprises a compressed gas store (1) provided with an outlet opening (100), a rupturing device (2) closing the outlet opening, a triggering device (5) generating a gas for opening the outlet opening, and at least one further rupturing device (3). The rupturing devices are supported on each other when the compressed gas store is closed and are designed so that they only together withstand the internal pressure of the compressed gas store. An increased pressure for rupturing a rupturing device is built up between the rupturing devices by the gas generated by the triggering device. Preferred Features: The rupturing devices are formed by destructible membranes.
