A drying house, for biomass e.g. wood chip, fruit peel etc, has a floor under a covered void, in which biological materials are stored and dried. The curved concrete roof incorporates meandering heat pipes, and has high horizontal and low edges, parallel with each other. The upper edge opens to provide free circulation of air between the biomass and roof. The roof lower edge is unattached and extends downwards to the level of the stored biomass. The front face of the drying house has a number of horizontal panels that pivot at their upper limit and open to promote ventilation. The heating medium is hot water that is pumped through intermittently, regulated by a microprocessor timing system. Hot water is pumped for 60 minutes, followed by a 30-minute ventilation interval. The roof incorporates a number of external photovoltaic panels.
