Method for detecting an electrically conducting object, especially a tool (24) or workpiece (22) in a machine tool (20). Accordingly electrically conducting liquid is sprayed at the object from a jet device (26). The jet device has an electrically conducting area (34) that is in contact with the fluid (30) and through which it can be established if there is an electrical contact with the object or not. Device for detecting an electrically conducting object in an area of a machine tool by use of a detecting jet of electrically conducting liquid. The voltage between the jet and particle causes a current to flow which is evaluated to determine a distance to an object.
