Read device has a radiation source for generating a scanning beam at a first wavelength with which the plate is excited on a pixel by pixel basis. The radiation source (15) comprises an LED linear array the individual diodes of which are alternately switched on. The LED array and the detector device (12-14) are mounted on a support (11) and moved a row at a time over the fluorescent plate.
