The device has a tilt detector with an acceleration sensor and a unit for stopping the engine in response to tilt detection if frequency with which acceleration sensor has detected mean values of outputs above a tilt threshold reaches a set value. A restoring unit clears engine stopped operation if the frequency with which the sensor detects outputs below the threshold reaches a second set value lower than the first. The device has a tilt detector (17) with an acceleration sensor (12) with a transverse detection range and/or an acceleration sensor for detecting transverse acceleration and a unit (19) for stopping the engine in response to the detection of tilting. Tilting is detected if the frequency with which the acceleration sensor has detected mean values of outputs above a tilt threshold reaches a set value. A restoring unit clears engine stopped operation if the frequency with which the sensor detects outputs below the threshold reaches a second set value lower than the first after tilting has been detected.
