Skin state determination method for an animal or human, whereby the skin is illuminated by a light source and scattered and collected light analyzed using a pattern recognition algorithm

State determination method for the skin surface of a human or animal body, in which light (LS) from a light source (2) is incident on the skin surface (1) and the intensity and or divergence of scattered or reflected light (LSR) is measured using a detector (3). A pattern recognition algorithm can then be used to generate unique and objective values for classification of the skin properties. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a method for determining the state of the skin surface using a pattern recognition algorithm in the form of a neuronal or RCE network or use of classical discrimination analysis; (b) an arrangement for determining the state of the skin surface.
