Method for checking the age of persons using automatic vending machines wherein the markings on age legitimization documents such as a personal identity pass, cash card or driver's license are checked to ensure that a person is above the required age to permit the purchasing of, for example, alcohol or cigarettes. The invention also relates to a corresponding unit for age legitimization for use with automatic vending machines. The inventive unit has optical sensors to read the data, validity and or security markings on a pass or license. Said data are then compared with reference data to determine if a person has reached the legal age for buying a product.
