New high-mol. wt. compounds showing circular dichroism, based on 3,6-carbazole units with an optically-active hydrocarbon group on the ring nitrogen, used in optical recording devices, e.g. DVD-RAM systems
New high-mol. wt. compounds which show circular dichroism, comprising a helical main chain containing at least 5 to 10000 monomer units consisting of 3,6-linked carbazole residues with an optically-active 4-20C hydrocarbon group on the nitrogen atom. High-mol. wt. compounds with a helical main chain containing at least 5 to 10000 monomer units of formula (I) are new; these compounds show circular dichroism. (Structure (I), page 12) R = an optically-active 4-20C hydrocarbon group . Independent claims are also included for (1) high-mol. wt. compounds comprising 5-10000 units of formula (I) as above (2) formed products consisting of these compounds (3) a method (M1) for the production of these compounds by polymerising the corresponding 3,6-dihalogenated carbazole compounds in presence of a dehalogenation catalyst
