Production of water-absorbing flat structure (A) based on hydrophilic foam involves compressing composite (B) to reduce thickness of (A) by not less than 50% and swelling by not less than 25% only in wet state. (B) is made by bonding nonwoven coated by in-situ polymerization to hydrophilic latex foam (C) before cure; forming superabsorbent polymer on flat, cured (C) by in-situ polymerization; or applying polymer with reactive side groups to flat, cured (C) and cure. Production of water-absorbing flat structure (A) based on hydrophilic foam involves compressing a composite (B) to reduce the thickness of (A) by not less than 50% and swelling again by not less than 25% only in the wet state. (B) is made by (i) bonding a nonwoven coated by in-situ polymerization to uncured hydrophilic latex foam (C) and curing (C) by heating (B); (ii) in-situ polymerization of monomers forming a superabsorbent polymer on flat, cured (C); or (iii) applying a polymer (D) containing reactive side groups to flat, cured (C) and curing (D) with crosslinker(s). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) water-absorbing flat structures; and (2) hygiene articles containing these.
