In a knitting process for Jacquard pile has a first stage in which a plate is advanced to present the tip at a position (23a) ('standard position') to form the loop pile in the deep pile knitting zone. In a second stage the plate tip is advanced to a position (23b) in which the plate tip is 0.05 to 0.15 mm lower than the standard position in the non-pile knitting zone. In a third stage, the plate is advanced to bring the plate tip to a second position (23c) which is 0.05 to 0.30 mm lower than the standard position in the non-pile knitting zone. Also claimed is a commensurate Jacquard pile formation pattern plate, in which the plate tip has two levels.
