A paper industry calender has two metal drums (1, 2) forming a nip gap. One heated drum (2) has a polymer mantle (8) and esp. incorporates a cooling system at the outer margin. The cooling system consists of passages (12-19) linked by one or more ring passages (16) for a cooling fluid. The ring passages (16) are separated from each other by an axial interval which extends between the paper web (3) outer margin and the outer edge of the polymer mantle (8). The cooling channels operate in a zone where the polymer mantle is at risk of damage from overheating. The temperature in the polymer mantle outer margin is regulated by the coolant and its associated temperature control system.
