Photoelectric encoder has a scale (104) that generates a periodic light intensity pattern of a given period when illuminated with a light source (102). A multiplicity of groups of light receiver elements can be displaced relative to the scale in order to generate phase signals with predefined phase differences. A multiplicity of light receiver elements are placed next to each other so that the same phase if formed by each group of receivers. Surface centroids are formed on a phase axis (109) of a pair of groups of receivers with a predetermined phase difference so that they overlap.
