Combustion engine in which the valve activation system is controlled so that during changes between rich and lean operating modes the air intake amount is reduced in order to gradually reduce the fuel-air ratio from the beginning of the change in operating modes and during and at the same time during the change the compression ratio is gradually decreased, while at the same time the valves are operated to permit the gradual increase in air and fuel supplies.
