Rotor (36') is made of a large number of laminae stacked together on a central shaft. Each lamina has four slots accommodating permanent magnets (266A-D) arranged to form a square in end view. The outer edges of the magnets are chamfered (264A'-D''). There are empty spaces (266A'-D'') at the edges of the permanent magnets. The parts of the laminae forming the pole shoes (260A-D) lie outside the magnets.
