The stove or furnace is designed to burn wood or brown coal. It has an ash-pan (11) which is normally kept under the grate to receive fine powder ash falling between the bars of the grate. The system to minimize spillage of ash consists of a box (1) with a handle (3) on top. It has a door (2) at the side, hinged on a horizontal axis (6) at its top edge. A cord (5) with a handle (8) passes through a small hole at the back of the box (7). It passes through the box and has a hook (4) on the end engaging with the handle (10) attached to the front wall (9) of the ash-pan. The box is placed with the open door adjacent to the front wall of the ash-pan. The ash-pan is then pulled out of its receptacle under the grate into the box and the door is closed.
