The protection system has several fog bomb or fog pellet firing system effective around the object. The effective mass of the fog bombs can be adjusted in height so that each bomb or pellet, when released, forms a fog region (22). The firing devices and the pellets are formed such that the resulting fog regions combine to form a tube type protective fog sleeve which completely surrounds the object or a sector of such a sleeve which surrounds part of the object. The fog sleeve has a height which is at least the height of the object.
