The sprocket or chain wheel (10) has a central bore (2) with internal teeth engaging splines on a shaft. The shaft runs on roller bearings in fixed bearing housings on either side of the sprocket. The bearing housings carry cleaning ribs (31-33) which scrape the sides and outer surfaces of the sprocket teeth (4,4A). Each tooth is divided into two separate portions with a circumferential groove between them. Each tooth has a pocket (6) engaging part of a chain link. Projections on the sides of the bearing housings engage in grooves (9) in the sides of the sprocket wheel.
