A cooling system for improving the cooling effect of a conventional fan, e.g. electric fan, has the protective screen over the fan blades replaced by a grid (1) of narrow metal pipes through which cooling fluid is pumped from a compressor mounted elsewhere on the fan, e.g. in the base (2) . The heat from the compressor can be ducted away via a flexible hose (3).
