The device has a steerable chassis on rollers or wheels, a carrier for the containers, and an upright grip frame. The carrier (4) has dimensions adapted to the size of the smallest container to be carrier. Upright container holders (6a-d) are positioned along the outer carrier edge. Most of the holders are adjustable and lockable to adapt to larger containers. The carrier is a horizontal frame formed as a so-called latin cross. The longer cross arm extends in direction of travel so that its shorter section forms a front support arm (4a), its longer section forms a rear support arm (4b), while the sections of the shorter cross arm, which are of the same length, form two side support arms (4c,d).
