A knife sharpening system has a honing rod or cylinder (2) held between end grips (4) in a horizontal position on top of a plastic moulded support housing (1). The honing rod or cylinder can be made of ceramic and is held with rotational adjustment, i.e. the honing surface can be rotated manually to spread the wear. The rod/cylinder is held by spring pressure to prevent rotation during normal honing. The support housing is stabilised on a support surface by friction grip pads.
