A conversion by which two straight ladders (2) are assembled into a secure free standing step ladder has a fitting comprising two short ladder sections (10) joined by a top hinge (11) and with the lower ends secured by a cross brace (16). The fitting is secured to the top ends of the two ladders using clamping tags and threaded fasteners. The fasteners grip into the ends of the hollow rungs and provide a secure fitting. The cross brace can also serve as a support for a hoist (20). The dimensions of the short ladder sections of the fitting are similar to those of the large ladders, e.g. rung spacing and width.
