A cost effective method for preparing a frost free foundation for a building without a cellar has a single excavation for a ballast layer (5) and a surround trench (10). The inside wall of the trench is fitted with a vertical cladding layer (3) whose upper edge extends out of the trench to form an outer surround for the concrete base (2). The trench is also filled with a frost free ballast. A further improvement has the outside of the cladding layer fitted with a cement based fibre board to take the outer rendering layer above ground level. The trench is about 40 to 50 cm wide and about 80 cm deep, enabling it to be dug by an excavator.
