The bed has a supporting frame (3) and height adjustable bedstead (2) fitted with an actuating element (16) which is operated by a safety switch off device (25) so that the bedstead can be locked relative to the supporting frame (3). The actuating element can be a rail whose longitudinal extension corresponds substantially to the width of the bed. The actuating element can be divided into two sections (17, 18) which can be operated separately from each other. A power supply can be used for electric height adjustment.
